Losinj Island

Dear visitor, first of all, we would like to thank you for visiting our new website and especially the part of "Croatia".

Losinj, MALI LOSINJ, a town, port and tourist resort on the island of Losinj, situated on the south-eastern part of a large and well-protected bay; population 6,566. Chief occupations are farming, fishing, shipbuilding, seafaring and tourism.

The climate is mild, with warm winters; the average air temperature in January is 7.3 °C and in July 24.7 °C; an average annual air temperature is 15 °C.

The favourable climate, hotels and villas, afforestation, well-equipped and easily accessible beaches have given rise to intense development of tourism.

The town itself lies in the most protected part of the bay. The houses are arranged amphitheatrically. Along the coast, free space is left, designated for public life of the town. Much of the town lies on the eastern side, exposed to the sun.

A road to Veli Losinj runs from the south-eastern part of the bay. As nautical tourism started to develop intensely, there is a marina in the port of Mali Losinj, equipped for all types of yachts and motor boats.

Pantelleria island AF-018 (1992)

The IOTA story of DST began in 1985 during a meeting of DST executive commitee. It was François ON6VP at the time City Manager DST who launched the proposal to make an IOTA Dx-pedition. By lack of participants, it took him seven years before he could make the first IOTA trip together with Roland ON1AEO (now ON4RDB). Roland was the man who said in the autum of 1991:” François, we do it, we make an IOTA trip to Pantelleria island in june next year and we take our xyl’s with us”. And we did, by car and boat, and we found our QTH in Tracino North East of Pantelleria after a travel of about 3000 Km. Three weeks later we were back home with 6000 Km on the counter! The first IOTA Dx-pedition of DST members was a fact.

Corsica island EU-014 (1996)

Again Roland ON1AEO (ON4RDB) who said, we do it once more. As you can see he was the drive and even now we didn’t found participants to joint us and also now we took our xyl’s with us and also this time we did the trip by car and boat. We had made a reservation for a bungalow near Bonifacio in the south of Corsica and it should be our QTH for the next three weeks. Corsica is a beautiful island with a wild nature and nice beaches.

Ile d’ Yeu EU-064 (1999)

The pioneering was done. After a three days reconnaissance expedition in November 1998 by Jempi ON4BBA (now ON8JP) en François ON6VP we found 9 enthusiastic OM in DST to make an IOTA trip to this small, quiet island in the Atlantic Ocean in front of the France Westcoast.

After a perfect organization we left for a week and found in our QTH a big luxary villa.

Elba island EU-028 (2001)

Now, IOTA-expedition has been a two-yearly tradition of our club. There is a hard core of participants and they are the inivators for every next IOTA trip. The decision about the destination is mostly taken by the participants.

This time we have chosen for Elba island and we were lodging in an old watermill in the middle of nowhere no luxury and little comfort. The trip was done by car and boat and we were one week QRV.

Pantelleria island AF-019 (2003)

This time, it must be an island too far for most of the regular members even for some of the hard core.

This resulted in only three OM who took off from Brussels for a long flight via Roma and Palermo to Lampedusa. An old dream of François ON6VP came true. Since he had activated AF-018 in 1992 together with Roland it was his great wish to go to AF-019. This wonderful island is located between the coast of Tunesia and Malta.

Losinj island Croatia EU-136 (2005)

Again a very fine Dx-pedition to a beautiful island in the Croatian archipelago in the north of the Croatian Adriatic. Never before was such a team of merry radio-amateurs with the right ham spirit together on a DST IOTA trip.

We had a nice lodge at Branka and Marija Todoric in Poljana II near Mali Losinj and after 8 days we were back home dreaming of IOTA 2007 at the same place.
